DUI Causes Injuries to Road Workers
Working on any type of road or highway crew can be dangerous. Road construction zones often have adjusted speed limits and stricter penalties for traffic law violators due to the high risk of serious injuries to workers. However, construction crews are not the only ones who are at risk of injury on the highways. A recent accident1 shows that emergency response personnel also may sustain severe injuries in crashes while on the job.
Drunk driver hits HERO worker
The Transportation Management Center of the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) dispatches Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO)2 to the scene of car accidents to help clear the lanes of debris so that traffic can flow as normally expected. On Sunday, August 2nd, an operator for HERO was setting out flares to divert traffic so that he could work to clear an earlier accident. Suddenly, he was struck by a car, causing him critical injuries to his head and brain.
The car was driven by a 25-year-old woman who subsequently crashed into another vehicle. Police were already at the scene due to the previous accident and placed the woman under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition to DUI, she now faces several other misdemeanor and felony charges including causing serious injury with a vehicle and reckless driving. Her bond is set at $77,500.
Though drunk drivers often face criminal charges following an accident, injured victims must file a separate personal injury claim in civil court in order to hold the driver financially liable for all of their accident-related losses, as a criminal case often will not provide adequate compensation for victims.
